Urban Dreams Coastal Nightmares

Project type

Documentary

Date

2024

Location

Tanza, Cavite

The participatory video project “Urban Dreams, Coastal Nightmares” raises awareness about the environmental consequences of Manila Bay’s reclamation projects. While these efforts are designed to boost Metro Manila’s economic growth and urban development, they cast a long shadow over the coastal communities of Cavite. Here, the traditional livelihoods of fisherfolk are being disrupted as their fishing grounds diminish and their incomes are threatened.

The participatory video begins by showcasing the anticipated benefits of Manila Bay’s reclamation, highlighting the vision of urban dreams and economic prosperity. However, the focus soon shifts to the environmental impact these projects leave on the coastal areas of Capipisa, Tanza, Cavite. Through interviews with local fisherfolk and insights from One Pawikan, a local environmental conservation organization, the video reveals the devastating effects of dredging on marine life and coastal ecosystems. The participatory video ends with a powerful call to action, urging viewers to recognize and address the costs of reclamation on both the environment and the affected communities.
